6 Best EMF Phone Cases in 2024

After talking on my iPhone for about 20 minutes I started getting headaches even when I used speakerphone. So I started doing my research and came across EMF phone cases.

They looked promising so I bought one to see if they really work and I noticed a difference immediately. I don’t get headaches anymore no matter how long I talk on my phone. I still use speakerphone whenever possible but more on that below.

Government Research on Cell Phone Health Effects

The research on the health effects from our government isn’t keeping up. The United States government hasn’t funded research into the health effects of radio frequencies radiation since the 1990s.

Except for one study in 2018 that found clear evidence of carcinogenicity from cellphone radiation with only 2G and 3G. There is plenty of research not funded by the government that show alarming results.

I don’t know anyone without a cell phone, they are practically a necessity and huge convenience in today’s society. Even my 86 year old Grandma relies on her cell for GPS, texting, Facebook and phone calls, while my 9 year old nephew practically lives on his phone.

According to Paw Research Center the percent of adults who didn’t own a smart phone went from 65% to only 15% in 2021. This is a huge concern if cell phones cause harmful effects.

How To Use An EMF Protection Phone Case

It’s important to know that EMF protection phone cases only have shielding material on one side (the outer flap) so you have to always use with the shielded side facing you. After you make or receive a phone call simply close the shielded flap.

Up To 90% RF Protection

From my tests I’m reducing my EMF exposure by almost 90% (not 99% more about that below) but I still don’t put it up to my ear.

I use speaker phone or my air tube headset whenever possible because the case doesn’t completely eliminate the EMF radiation coming from your phone. Also remember when carrying your phone to point the shielded side toward you.

It’s only shielded on one side to allow the signal to go through the back so you can still making and receive phone calls and texts. If you are looking to block all signals you want a Faraday bag for your cell phone instead.

All of the cases listed below (with the exception of the RadiArmor phone sleeve) are wallet cases with credit card slots. These cases also provide radio frequency identification (RFID) protection, which prevents credit card hacking in public spaces.

The One I Use

My favorite and the one I use is the detachable version for the iPhone.

I like that its very thin and light, it comes with magnetic detachable case that is certified military grade drop tested.

The front flap has a RFID blocking wallet that holds my debit, card, points card and another side pocket for cash.

This case has a built in convertible stand which is great for watching video and things like that.

I like the removable magnetic case because it allows me to easily take my phone out for things like taking photos and video.

The DefenderShield EMF radiation case is the priciest model on the list, but it is extensively lab tested and FCC certified. This company has done its research.

3. RadiArmor Phone Sleeve

This RadiArmor Phone Sleeve is a different type of protective case. It’s actually a neoprene sleeve or pouch that you slip your phone into and wear as a holster on a belt. It has a Velcro closure, and one size fits most phones.

The manufacturer says it uses a proprietary metallic fabric and blocks between 91% and 99% of EMF radiation.

4. Sanxir Anti-Radiation Case

This Sanxir Anti-Radiation Case uses double-shielded technology that blocks 98% of EMF radiation.

5. RadiArmor Anti-Radiation Case

The RadiArmor Anti-Radiation Case appears to be available only for iPhones at the time of this writing. The manufacturer says it blocks 99% of EMF radiation.

What Meter To Use To Test Your EMF Phone Case

It’s always a good idea to test the EMF protection products you buy to ensure that they are doing what they claim to do. Unfortunately there are a lot of scams and fake products out there.

You need a meter that can measure high frequency RF radiation. Don’t make the mistake of buying a meter that measure low frequency magnetic field (LFM).

In order to measure RF radiation from your cell phone you want a meter with a greater range (like the Trifield 100XE) not sensitivity (like the Trifield TF2).

Meterk Meter Test– don’t use this one, it’s give funny results like reacting to the metal of the cases because of the magnetic sensor inside the detector.

Trifield Model 100XE Test – This is a great meter to use if you have it, unfortunately it’s been discontinued. As you can see from the picture below the EMF readings are off the chart before the phone case is closed. After the case is closed you can see a significant drop.

This case is achieved about a 90% reduction. You will never get a 100% reduction because some EMF will always come out the top and side.

In order to properly test the difference between the RF radiation coming from your cell phone with and without a case you need a professional EMF meter like the HF 59B I used below. There is a great video below that explains why you can’t use cheaper meters or even the Trifield TF2.

Tenmars TM-195 Test – this meter is calibrated to be 10x more sensitive than the the Trifield 100XE mentioned above that’s too sensitive for this test so it needs to be reduced unfortunately even at the lowest sensitivity it is still 1000 times more sensitive.

Anything above 32 microwatts per centimter square doesn’t give an accurate reading. In the test below you can see that there is a huge reduction even with it being way more sensitive.

Trifield TF2 Test – This meter is calibrated to be very sensitive. With the RF setting you can measure milliwatts per meter square, the TF2 is 10 000 times more sensitive than the Trifield 100 XE. When you use the TF2 to measure cell phone radiation is reaches it’s max peak (above 20 milliwatts per squared) instantly with and without the case closed. Once you reach max peak the numbers on the meter don’t mean anything for this test because you can’t measure a reduction.

This doesn’t mean the case isn’t working, it means that the levels are too high both ways for the meter to show any reduction. You need to use a different meter to see a reduction, one that is less sensitive. This meter will measure RF radiation from cell phones but it won’t show you exactly how much because it’s too high for the meter. In order for you to see any results with this meter you would have to reduce the RF by over 99%.

My Radio Frequency Radiation Test and Measurements

HF 59B meter – I tested the level of radio frequency radiation from my cell phone while making a call with and without the protection case.

Remember “Extreme concern” range starts at 1000 uW/m2. Here are my results.

• Front of the phone – over 18 000 uW/m2
• Right side – over 14 000 uW/m2
• Left side – over 20 000 uW/m2
• Back – over 19 000 uW/m2

With EMF Case On (SafeSleeve)

• Front – 7 700 uW/m2
• Left side – over 18 800 uW/m2
• Right side – over 20 000 uW/m2
• Back – over 20 000 uW/m2

With Case On But Shield Flap Flipped To The Back (incorrect use)

• Front – over 20 000 uW/m2

The conclusion of my test is that using the case properly with the flap closed reduces the EMF significantly from the front but like all protective cases EMF will still bleed from the top, bottom and sides or you wouldn’t get a signal and be able to use your phone.

These levels are still extremely concerning so I still never hold my phone up to my ear. I use speaker phone with my phone sitting on a table in front of me or I use my favorite pair of Defendershield air tube headphones.

Why Aren’t My Trifield TF2 Results Accurate

I’ve tried to use my Trifield TF2 meter to show the before and after results of my iphone EMF cases but the problem with this is that both max out the meter.

Meaning that the radiation is too high for the meter to measure (which is scary) but this doesn’t mean there isn’t reduction it. The meter just can’t read what the reduction is. People have had the same problem with other meters too.

Do EMF Phone Cases Work ?

Yes, but do they block 99% of RF radiation? No they don’t. EMF shielding phone cases can block up to 90% RF which is still a huge reduction.

The reason they don’t block 99% is because these cases aren’t Faraday bags and only the front flap has shielding material inside so you will always get RF bleeding from the back, top and sides of your phone.

How Much Do EMF Protection Phone Cases Cost?

The price of good EMF shielding phone cases can vary anywhere from $37 to $75 USD.

The price range for the best two brands are $60 – $70 for SafeSleeve cases and $65 – $75 USD for Defendershield cases.

I used to buy tempered glass to protect my screen for about $10 and then a phone case for about $30-$40. With my new case I don’t need the tempered glass because the wallet style protects it.

So my EMF blocking case didn’t really cost me much more and honestly I would pay more for the radiation protection and peace of mind. Chances are you are going to buy a case for your phone so you might as well buy one with EMF protection.

Are EMF Blocking Phone Cases A Scam?

Some EMF protection products out there are just pure scams but even the most reputable companies use somewhat misleading advertising. The 99% reduction they are referring to is the actual material or technology used inside the products and not the products themselves.

If you read it carefully you will see “Up to 99% of FCC lab tested shielding technology” or “FCC certified lab testing, our state of the art technology blocks virtually 100% of the full frequency spectrum of electromagnetic radiation (EMF)”.

The FCC certified labs they cite use a controlled signal generator and test raw material. They don’t test the actual product using a real phone.

So in that sense they aren’t living material could block 100% in the right situation.

Cell Phones Are Necessary For Most

For many people, cell phones are a job requirement, with the expectation that it is on you at all times. I bet that if your cell is not on you that it is within reach right now. The convenience of all that data readily available at our fingertips comes at a cost to us. One that many people still don’t realize and that has taken the rest of us a long time to figure out.

Cell phones emit a form of radiation, one that has been linked to a number of serious and chronic health problems. We still don’t know the full effect it has on us, as studies haven’t been done yet that shows the long-term effects of this constant radiation exposure.

Landlines Would Be Ideal

Now the ideal solution would be toss your cell phones and go back to landlines that is wired in, because cordless phones also emit radiation but obviously that’s not something 99% of us are willing to do. Good for you if you can do it. I certainly cannot but there are things you can do to reduce the amount of radiation you’re exposed to.

Of course, these measures will not protect you when you are actually using your device. The best solution would be to not use a cell phone at all. But that’s no longer feasible for most of us.

To reduce your radio frequencies from the newer phones you have to turn off 5 antennas. All of these antennas are emitting even if you aren’t using them. They are WIFI, Bluetooth, Celluar Data, “find my phone” and location services which is GPS.

You can always get an EMF meter to see exactly how much your cell phone emits and what distance is the safest but remember you have to get one that can measure high .

How EMF Shielding Cases Work

The most common type of EMF-shielding cell phone case is made of a fine mesh fabric that covers the screen side of your phone. You speak and listen through this fabric, which acts as a barrier between your face and the radiation your phone emits. In well-made cases, this causes minimal to no reduction in sound quality.
